The 2010 Faith &
Health Summit is designed to illustrate the spiritual relevance of healthy
living and to engage health, faith and political leaders in critical
discussions around cultivating and safeguarding key partnerships. All interested persons are invited to attend.
WORKSHOPS AND LEADERS
Keynote Address. The connection between our faith and health and the unique opportunity that churches have to improve the health behaviors of congregants and other community members. Presented by Rev. Dr. Gary Gunderson, Senior V.P. for Health and Welfare Ministries, Methodist Healthcare, Memphis, TN.
Mental Health. Clergy training on how to identify mental health problems in congregants and make proper referrals. Led by Rev. John Tote, Executive Director, Mental Health Association in North Carolina, Inc.
Church-sponsored Community Gardens and Farmers’ Markets. Tips on how to make more local, nutritious foods available to people of faith. Led by Claire Hermann and Chris Liu-Beers, Come to the Table Project, NC Council of
Churches.
Health Disparities. A faith- and evidence-based approach to addressing health disparities through the Black church. Co-led by Rev. Dr. Moses Goldmon, Director, Action Research in Ministry Institute, and Dr. Melicia Whitt-Glover, President & CEO, Gramercy Research Group.
NCCC’s Health Certification Program and Resource Materials. An introduction to the NC Council of Churches’ health program, Partners in Health and Wholeness (PHW), and the new PHW Certification Program. Led by Rev. George Reed, Executive Director, NC Council of Churches.
Congregational Health. Three things that congregants can do to improve their health – move more, eat more fruits and vegetables and go tobacco-free! Led by David Hall, Program Coordinator, Faithful Families, NC Physical Activity and Nutrition Branch, NC Division of Public Health.
Health Promotion from the Pulpit. A pastor who models health from the pulpit will discuss his personal journey towards better health and how he incorporates health and wholeness into worship services. Led by Rev. Dr. Cornelius Battle, Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, Durham.
Faith-based Emergency Preparedness. Using H1N1 as an example, information will be shared to help the faith community prepare for public health emergencies. Co-led by Dr. Calvin Ellison, Founder/Chairman of Community Empowerment Network of NC,
Farmville, and Marie Miranda, Public Health Consultant, Office of Minority Health and
Health Disparities.
Health Care Reform. Depending on the status of the current health care bill, this workshop will offer an analysis of what happened, lessons learned and next steps OR what the new law means for you, your family and congregation. Co-led by Sandy Irving, Heath Care Reform Volunteer, NC Council of Churches, and Lynice Williams, Executive Director, NC Fair Share.
Clergy Health. An update on the Clergy Health Initiative – a new program by the Duke
Endowment, United Methodist Church, and Duke Divinity School – to improve the health of United Methodist clergy. Information will also be shared on how clergy, regardless of their denomination or faith, can take control of their personal health. Led by Robin Swift, Director, Clergy Health Initiative, Duke Divinity School.
NCIOM Prevention Action Plan. An overview of the NCIOM’s list of 10 preventable risk factors (i.e., factors that contribute to early death and disability) and opportunities for people of faith to use this information to improve their health.
Led by Dr.
Pam Silberman, President and CEO, North Carolina Institute of Medicine.
Workshops will be 60
minutes in length, with a 10-15 break after each session. Five of the workshops will be repeated.
