Public Education Sabbath

The North Carolina Council of Churches’ Public Education Committee is calling on religious bodies all over the state to set aside a day of worship that is focused on public education. It is a great opportunity for local congregations to recognize people employed by the public schools, to reach out to local Boards of Education, and to strengthen the relationship between local public schools and congregations.

It is also a time to examine some of the struggles that public education is undergoing, including inadequate funding, disparity in funding, low teacher pay, the high suspension rate of Black
males, the ongoing and growing achievement gap, and the new graduation requirements that may cause even more disheartened students to drop out.

Congregations can use Public Education Sabbath as a time to commit or recommit to encouraging decision makers at every level to provide adequate support for public education. They can devise strategies to attend Board of Education meetings in their community and at the state level in
Raleigh.

Public Education Sabbath can be observed on any Sunday; however, it is most fitting in August, just prior to the opening of school. It can be a great day of recognitions and building relationships,
but let it also be a day of making the real commitment to get involved.

The words of the prophet Amos strike at the hearts of all of us: “I hate your show and pretense – your hypocrisy of ‘honoring’ me with your religious feasts and solemn assemblies. I will not accept your burnt offerings and thank offerings. I will not look at your offerings of peace. Away with your hymns of praise – they are mere noise to my ears. I will not listen to your music, no matter how lovely it is. I want to see a mighty flood of justice – a torrent of doing good.”
