STUDY AND DEVOTIONAL GUIDES

Caring for Creation: A Prayer/Action Guide for Lenten "Fast from Carbon." Traditionally Lent, the 40 days before Easter, has been a time of self-evaluation, repentance, and renewal. Typical spiritual practices include prayer, almsgiving, and fasting. NC Interfaith Power & Light invites you to “fast from carbon,” to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide you put into the atmosphere. Click here to download this resource.

Caring for God's Creation During Advent and Beyond: A Prayer/Action Guide. This four week guide invites participants to replace one light bulb with a compact fluorescent light (CFL) each of the four times a new Advent Candle is lit. The guide provides a prayerful context, and although it is written for individual and family use, it can be easily adapted for Sunday schools, worship, or other venues. Order from NC IPL. $10 for a hard copy and a CD which can be copied to meet congregational needs.

One for Each Night: A Hanukkah Study Guide for a Brighter Future
This guide invites participants to replace one light bulb with a compact fluorescent light (CFL) each night of Hanukkah. Though written for individual and family use, it can easily be adapted for congregational activities. It was developed by Georgia Interfaith Power & Light and
Congregation Bet Haverim in Atlanta and amended for North Carolina by NC IPL.

It's God's World: Christians, Care for Creation and Global Warming. This resource contains five sessions designed to help Christians make some sense of the issues relating to global warming from the perspective of their faith. For each session there is a suggested format for a one-hour study session. Leaders may want to adapt the study to fit another time frame.

Available through Church World Service. Download a free PDF copy by going to: http//www.webofcreation.org. Or you may order copies for $1.00 each from Environmental Justice Resources, National Council of Churches, PO Box 968 , Elkhart , Indiana 46515 , 800-762-0965 or 219-264-3102. The Cry of Creation: A Call for Climate Justice. Interfaith study guide on global warming prepared by Earth Ministry contains three weeks' worth of readings and meetings. Using the video "God's Creation and Global Warming" as one week's program, this would become a 4-week study.

Available as PDF at www.nccecojustice.org/resources.html

Discussion guide for Kilowatt Ours: A guide prepared by NC IPL to move groups beyond the technical and scientific domains to considering moral, spiritual or faith dimensions of the issues raised in the film. Click here to download a copy of the guide.

VIDEOS

Kilowatt Ours: A Plan to Re-Energize America (Jeff Barrie -- 2005) traces the wires from our light switches to the power source, revealing how electricity is generated in the southeastern United States. This acclaimed documentary appeals to adults and teens, transcending differences of social, political and religious viewpoints, class and race.

Hopeful but down-to Earth, it provides practical ideas for consumers to lower their energy bills and reverse global warming. You can order the film by downloading our order form featuring special NC IPL prices of $20 for individuals or $35 for congregations (reduced from the standard donation of $95.00).

Also use the discussion guide prepared by NC IPL (see our Study Guides on this page).

God's Creation and Global Warming is a remarkably well-done 15-minute video developed around the call of the world's religious bodies to care for creation. Can be used with "The Cry of Creation" Study Guide (see above). Prepared by National Council of Churches, National Religious Partnership for the Environment, and Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life. $12.00. Order from NC IPL.

Lighten Up! Is a 25-minute interfaith video produced by The Regeneration Project and GraceCom Media. $7.00. Order from NC IPL.

Power Shift is a 26-minute video suitable for teens and adults narrated by Cameron Diaz. It explores the remarkable ways energy touches our daily lives, and issues a call to all of us to imagine, and work toward a future powered by alternative energy sources. Produced by California State and Consumer Services Agency. Available from the NC IPL lending library.
